Galchenyuk, Barber have goal, two assists each to lead USA over Germany 8-0

UFA, Russia - Alex Galchenyuk and Riley Barber each had a goal and two assists to power the United States past Germany 8-0 on Thursday at the world junior hockey tournament.

It was the first Pool B game of the competition for the Americans, who moved into a first-place tie with Canada.

The Canadians downed Germany 9-3 on Wednesday.

Sean Kuraly added a goal and an assist for the U.S., while Jacob Trouba, Shayne Gostisbehere, Ryan Hartman, J.T. Miller and Seth Jones had the other goals.

John Gibson stopped all 19 shots he faced through two periods in the U.S. goal.

He was replaced for the third by Jon Gillies, who made seven saves.

German goalie Marvin Cupper stopped 38 shots.

Note to readers: This is a corrected story. A previous version said the two teams were in Pool A.

Quote of the Day

What we expected is what we got. Very mature young individual that's focused. He is on the right track. He's not only a great hockey individual, but he's a good person off the ice. He seemed to take a leadership role with this group right off the hop and ran away with it, and was vocal, was respectful, was everything it takes to be a Panther. His future looks bright.

— Florida Panthers director of player development Brian Skrudland on defenseman Aaron Ekblad's performance at development camp
