KENNEWICK, Wash. - Nic Petan had two goals and an assist as the Portland Winterhawks defeated the Tri-City Americans 4-1 on Sunday night in the Western Hockey League.

Derrick Pouliot added a goal and two assists as the Winterhawks (25-5-2) remained atop the Western Conference with the Kamloops Blazers with 51 points.

Portland led 2-1 after the first period, but a pair of power-play goals 21 seconds apart early in the second gave the Winterhawks a comfortable lead.

Seth Jones chipped in a goal and an assist for Portland, while Brendan Burke had 25 saves in picking up his ninth win.

Rookie forward Beau McCue scored the Americans’ (18-12-2) lone goal in the first period. Eric Comrie had 33 saves in the loss.

I didn't think it would actually work, but it ended up working, so I'm thanking my lucky stars tonight.
