WHL Roundup: A look at Wednesday's games

Cain Franson scored two goals Wednesday as the struggling Vancouver Giants stunned the Victoria Royals 7-2 in the Western Hockey League.

Jackson Houck, Kale Kessy, Riley Kieser, Brett Kulak and Carter Popoff also scored for the Giants (8-20-0).

Steven Hodges and Logan Nelson replied for the Royals (15-14-0).

Vancouver opened the scoring late in the first period when a shot by Franson went off a Royals defender and past goaltender Patrik Polivka.

The Giants made it 2-0 with just eight seconds left in the first when Houck blasted home a low point shot on the power play.

The Giants stretched their lead to three early in the second period as Kessy deflected a quick shot by Wes Vannieuwenhuizen, chasing Polivka from the Royals net.

Elsewhere in the WHL it was: Kelowna 6, Swift Current 5; Lethbridge 6, Edmonton 2; Red Deer 5, Regina 1; and Spokane 4, Saskatoon 1.

At Victoria, the Royals got on the board with just over seven minutes left in the middle period when a Giants defenceman deflected a weak shot from Hodges into his own net.

Vancouver responded quickly, regaining the three-goal lead when a low snapshot by Kieser beat relief goalie Coleman Vollrath.

Victoria made it 4-2 when Nelson batted in a loose puck, but Vancouver took a commanding 5-2 lead early in the third period when Kulak poked a loose puck under Vollrath.

Less than a minute later Franson potted a rebound for his second of the game, and then Popoff backhanded one in from the slot to finish the game at 7-2.

Giants goalie Payton Lee made 31 saves in the win.

Polivka stopped 12-of-15 shots before being pulled. Vollrath stopped 9-of-13 shots in relief.

Rockets 6, Broncos 5

At Saskatoon, Eric Williams made 30 saves as Spokane (21-7-1) rolled past the Blades (13-14-1).

Quote of the Day

I think everyone left it out there. Every game this season, regular season and playoffs, we played as hard as we could. We're not out of the playoffs right now because of lack of effort, and that's all that we can ask of each other.
