Latvian star Astashenko dead at 37

The Latvian Hockey Federation announced Friday that Kaspars Astashenko died. He was 37.

The defenseman played 23 games for the Tampa Bay Lightning between 1999 and 2001, scoring one goal and two assists.

At the international level, Astashenko scored one goal and three assists in 13 games for the Latvian national team. He skated for his country at many international events, among them the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City and the 2006 IIHF World Championships in his hometown of Riga, Latvia.

Quote of the Day

That was something I've been dreaming of, something I've told myself before the third period I was going to do ... It was an amazing feeling. It's hard to describe. I didn't believe it went in at first but when I saw all the reaction and all the fans going crazy and my teammates going crazy, it's just an unbelievable feeling. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know whether to jump or just skate and do a Theo Fleury. I don't think I'm the same caliber player he is so I couldn't do it.
