Virtanen scores winner as the Hitmen edge the Hurricanes 3-2

CALGARY - Jake Virtanen scored the game-winning goal with 27 seconds left in the third period as the Calgary Hitmen edged the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2 in Western Hockey League action on Wednesday.

Jaynen Rissling had a goal and an assist for the Hitmen (16-5-3), who also beat the Hurricanes 3-2 on Tuesday night in Lethbridge to sweep the home-and-home series.

Alex Roach also scored for Calgary, which has won three straight games and eight of its past nine.

Axel Blomqvist and Tyler Wong scored for the Hurricanes (13-12-2), who have lost four straight games and five of their past six.

Chris Driedger only had to make 14 saves for the win as Ty Rimmer stopped 46 shots in a losing cause.

Calgary went 1-for-2 on the power play while Lethbridge finished 1-for-7.

Rissling put the Hitmen up 1-0 with an unassisted goal at 7:18 of the second period before Blomqvist replied for the Hurricanes just under four minutes later.

Roach then scored for Calgary late in the second period, but Wong scored a power-play goal for Lethbridge at 15:05 of the third period to tie up the game once again.

The Hitmen outshot the Hurricanes 20-3 in the final period and that hard work paid off as Virtanen scored the winning goal in the game’s final minute.

Quote of the Day

I've never seen anything like that. The great thing is I don't know how many times guys bailed me out where they had to score to keep it alive and they did every time. It was amazing. It's not the way we draw it up, to go 20 rounds here, but obviously it's a big win.
