Jamie Crooks scores 2 to lead Victoria Royals past Saskatoon Blades 5-2

VICTORIA - Jamie Crooks had a pair of goals as the Victoria Royals beat the Saskatoon Blades 5-2 on Tuesday night in Western Hockey League action.

Tyler Stahl, Alex Gogolev and Brandon Magee each scored singles for Victoria (12-11-0).

Matej Stransky and Brenden Walker replied for Saskatoon (10-11-1).

Victoria opened the scoring early in the first period, on a one-timer through traffic, from Magee for his 10th of the season.

Crooks made it 2-0 on the power play 1:46 into the second before Walker got Saskatoon on the board at 10:25.

Victoria answered back with a pair of goals. The first was a short-handed breakaway goal from Crooks.

Then late in period Gogolev scored his 10th of the season, and extended his point streak to seven games, to make it 4-1 Royals.

Victoria kept coming in the third with a goal from Stahl at 3:43 to make it 5-1.

Stranksy scored on the power play to bring Saskatoon within three, but that is as close as they would come.

Royals' goaltender Patrik Polivka made 29 saves for the victory. Andrey Makarov made 22 saves for the Blades before being replaced by Alex Moodie, who allowed one goal on nine shots in the third.

Quote of the Day

I watched many times this year the series between the Russians and Canada in 1972, and he was a dominating player there. After I watched the tapes, I respect him a lot more because he turned the series around. He was the guy. In that time, he was the best in the world. It’s a big honor for me to tie him.
