Cardwell scores OT winner as the Bulls edge the Whalers 3-2

BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Jake Cardwell scored the winning goal in overtime for the Belleville Bulls as they beat the host Plymouth Whalers 3-2 on Saturday night in Ontario Hockey League action.

Brendan Gaunce and Jordan Subban scored in regulation for Belleville (12-7-3).

Alex Aleardi scored both goals for Plymouth (10-7-4).

After a scoreless first period, Aleardi broke to the outside with speed and put a wrist shot through the pads of Malcolm Subban.

Gaunce answered back with a goal of his own, taking a centering pass and banging home his sixth of the season.

The two clubs exchanged goals in the third period, starting with Belleville taking the lead on a point shot from Jordan Subban that found the back of the net.

Aleardi took just over a minute to knot things up again, stepping over the blue line and wristing a shot from the high slot that eluded Malcolm Subban's glove.

Cardwell's goal was his first in a Bulls' uniform and came from a wrist shot inside the right face-off circle that beat Alex Nedeljkovic over the shoulder at 2:33 of overtime.

Malcolm Subban made 30 saves for the win while Nedeljkovic, in his OHL debut, stopped 25 shots in a losing cause.

Belleville went 1-for-4 on the power play while Plymouth went 0-for-8.

Quote of the Day

I think I'm lucky to be here and you definitely don't take very many things for granted, if you take anything for granted. I definitely put my family and my wife and my close family in perspective, that they're the most important thing in the world. I want to do whatever I can to play hockey, but like I said, under the right circumstances.
