Gibson makes 37 saves, Bailey scores winner to lead Rangers over Whalers 2-1

KITCHENER, Ont. - John Gibson turned aside 37 shots and Justin Bailey's goal three minutes into the third period was the difference Sunday as the Kitchener Rangers edged the Plymouth Whalers 2-1 Sunday in the Ontario Hockey League.

Bailey scored the eventual in the opening minutes of the third period, firing a shot past Plymouth goalie Matt Mahalak from the slot.

The win gave the Rangers (8-4-2) a split in the home-and-home series with the Whalers (7-4-3), who won Saturday night in Plymouth by the same 2-1 score. The Rangers are undefeated at home with a 4-0-0 record.

Matt Puempel also scored for the Rangers, while Ryan Hartman replied for the Whalers.

Mahalak turned aside 28-of-30 shots in taking the loss.

Kitchener was 0-for-5 on the power play, while Plymouth was shutout in six opportunities with the man advantage.

After a scoreless first period, the Whalers struck quickly in the second with Hartman snapping Garrett Meurs' pass from behind the net past Gibson.

Puempel tied the game just past the midway point of the period with the teams playing 4-on-4, deflecting Jared Gilbert's point shot by Mahalak's blocker.

Quote of the Day

He seemed to thrive on his own and didn't really need any push from me. I certainly don't want to get in the way of the coaches. You see how that goes sometimes. I never really worried about it and just enjoyed the ride.
