Marcantuoni scores SO winner as the Rangers edge the Attack 3-2

KITCHENER, Ont. - Matia Marcantuoni scored the lone goal of the shootout as the Kitchener Rangers beat the visiting Owen Sound Attack 3-2 on Friday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Matt Puempel had both goals in regulation for the Rangers (7-4-1), who won their fourth game in a row.

Kyle Hope and Gemel Smith scored for the Attack (8-2-2), who have dropped back-to-back contests.

John Gibson turned aside 42-of-44 shots for the win as Jordan Binnington stopped 33 shots in defeat..

Kitchener was 0-for-3 on the power play while Owen Sound failed to earn any power-play opportunities.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Hope finished off a passing play with Joseph Blandisi and Kurtis Gabriel with less than five minutes left in second period to make it 1-0 Owen Sound.

The Rangers pulled even with 21 seconds remaining when Puempel scored his first of the night.

Puempel gave the Rangers the lead before the third period was three minutes old, beating Binnington along the ice from the slot.

Smith tied the game with an extra attacker on the ice with 1:06 remaining in the third, firing a shot off a face-off in the Kitchener end over Gibson’s shoulder.

Overtime solved nothing and both teams went to the fifth shooter before Marcantuoni ended the game.

Quote of the Day

Well, for me this one's concerning, the way we performed. Because three games in, playing a desperate team on the road, I was expecting something else than this. Right now, I'm just disappointed. The other games, I thought we did some things that you can build off your game. There wasn't a lot accomplished in tonight's game.
