Payne scores twice as the Whalers double up the Generals 4-2

OSHAWA, Ont. - Cody Payne scored twice, including the game winner, as the Plymouth Whalers defeated the host Oshawa Generals 4-2 on Sunday in Ontario Hockey League play.

Rickard Rakell scored in his third straight game for the Whalers (5-3-3), who have won three of their last four contests, and Ryan Hartman added an empty-net goal to round out his club's offence.

Colin Suellentrop and Scott Sabourin each scored for the Generals (8-4-1).

Matt Mahalak made 29 saves for the win as Daniel Altshuller stopped 22-of-25 shots in a losing cause.

Plymouth failed to score on five chances with the man advantage while Oshawa went 2-for-5.

Stefan Noesen of the Whalers and Scott Laughton of the Generals were both handed misconducts for abuse of the official with only 18 seconds remaining in the game.

Quote of the Day

You don't see many. The [Drew] Doughtys, the [P.K.] Subbans, those are guys that create offense from the back and then on top of that ability, the size that he has. In the West you play against some pretty big players, and being able to clear the crease and contain the [Ryan] Getzlafs and the [Corey] Perrys and [Anze] Kopitars and players like that, we're excited about him going back there.
