Sylvester scores three times as the Hitmen edge the Giants 5-4

VANCOUVER - Cody Sylvester scored his first Western Hockey League hat trick as the Calgary Hitmen held on and defeated the host Vancouver Giants 5-4 on Saturday in WHL action.

Brooks Macek had a goal and an assist for the Hitmen (8-2-2), who had a 5-1 lead heading into the third period, and Greg Chase chipped in with two assists.

Josh Thrower added a single goal to round out Calgary's offence.

Dalton Sward and Trevor Cheek each had a goal and an assist for the Giants (2-8-0), who have now dropped four games in a row, and Thomas Foster and Blake Orban had a goal apiece.

Mack Shields stopped 30 shots for the win as Tyler Fuhr allowed five goals on 24 shots in a losing effort.

Calgary went 2-for-5 on the power play while Vancouver went 1-for-5.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.
