OHL Roundup: Jake Paterson and Saginaw Spirit blank Sudbury Wolves 5-0

Jake Paterson put the Saginaw Spirit on his shoulders Thursday night.

Paterson turned aside all 30 shots he faced as the Spirit blanked the Sudbury Wolves 5-0 for their first win of the Ontario Hockey League season.

Eric Locke scored twice for Saginaw (1-1-1) and Andrey Alexeev and Vincent Trocheck had a goal and an assist to pave the way. Justin Kea also scored and Grant Webermin had a pair of assists.

Trocheck opened the scoring at 13:19 with a goal from the slot with assists going to Webermin and Ringuette.

Saginaw increased its lead to 2-0, scoring the only goal of the second period as Russian import Alexeev scored his first OHL goal from the top of the face-off circle after receiving a pass from Garrett Ross.

The Spirit had three power-play goals in the third period.

Locke scored twice at 3:33 and added the second goal at 17:50, finishing a three-way passing play from Alexeev and Webermin.

Kea scored with Sudbury two men short at 4:43 in between the two Locke goals.

Elsewhere in the OHL it was: Erie 5 Peterborough 1; Windsor 4 Kitchener 2 and Barrie 4 Owen Sound 3 (SO).

At Saginaw, Mich., Joel Vienneau stopped 26 shots for Sudbury (2-1-0).

The game featured lots of rough stuff as the two teams combined for 14 minor and two major penalties.

Otters 5 Petes 1

At Peterborough, Ont., Oscar Dansk made 47 saves to lead Erie past the Petes.

Stephen Harper scored twice to lead Erie (1-2-0), while Jake Evans, Nick Betz and Travis Wood also had goals.

Trevor Murphy scored the only goal for Peterborough (1-2-0), which outshot Erie 48-30 but couldn't solve Dansk.

Spitfires 4 Rangers 2

At Windsor, Ont., Chris Marchese struck twice as the Spitfires dropped Kitchener.

Derek Schoenmakers also scored for Windsor (2-1-0), while Michael Clarke put the puck into the empty net.

Tobias Rieder and Brent Pedersen supplied the offence for the Rangers (2-1-0).

Colts 4 Attack 3 (SO)

At Barrie, Ont., Josh MacDonald scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Colts edged Owen Sound.

Winnipeg Jets prospect Mark Scheifele and Zach Hall each had a goal and an assist for Barrie (2-2-0). MacDonald had the other goal in regulation time.

Daniel Catenacci, Daniel Zweep and Zach Nastasiuk replied for the Attack (2-0-1), who lost their first game this season.
