Holmberg with three points as the Chiefs down the Americans 5-2

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Mitch Holmberg scored once and setup two more as the Spokane Chiefs defeated the host Tri-City Americans 5-2 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action.

Liam Stewart and Carter Proft each had a goal and an assist for the Chiefs (1-0-0) and Mike Aviani added a single goal.

Malte Stromwall and Parker Bowles scored for the Americans (0-1-0), who at one point were down 4-0 in the second period.

Mac Engel turned away 29 shots for the win as Eric Comrie allowed four goals on 34 shots against in a losing effort.

Spokane went 1 for 6 on the power play while tri-City failed to score on three chances with the man advantage.

The Americans had won 11 consecutive home openers, including six over the Chiefs. They last lost a home opener Oct. 7, 2000 — an 8-0 loss to Spokane.

Quote of the Day

He's only 17 but he can see the ice so well and he moves the puck and goes to the open ice all the time, so I just think he's a player that is ready to play in the NHL. I'm really looking forward to coaching someone like this.

— U.S. National Junior Team coach Ron Wilson on Auston Matthews, the projected No. 1 pick of the 2016 NHL Draft
