Alderson scores twice, including OT winner, as Greyhounds edge Whalers 6-5

SAULT-STE-MARIE, Ont. - Brandon Alderson's scored 22 seconds into overtime as the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds edged the Plymouth Whalers 6-5 on Friday in Ontario Hockey League action.

The Greyhounds (1-0-0), who were down 5-3 midway through the third period, forced overtime after Ryan Sproul and Jared McCann scored back-to-back goals.

Sproul had a goal and two assists in the game and Alderson finished the night with two goals.

Dylan Staples and Sergei Tolchinsky also scored for the Greyhounds while Darnell Nurse and David Broll had two assists each.

Cody Payne, Stefan Noesen, Garrett Meurs, Connor Carrick and Alex Aleardi scored for the Whalers (0-0-1).

Matt Murray stopped 37 shots for the win as Matt Mahalak turned aside 26 shots in a losing effort.

Sault Ste. Marie went 1 for 8 on the power play while Plymouth failed to score on five chances with the man advantage.
