Niagara IceDogs kick off OHL season with 4-2 win over Erie Otters

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Niagara IceDogs capped off a banner-raising evening with a 4-2 victory over the Erie Otters in Ontario Hockey League action Thursday night.

Anthony DiFruscia's first OHL goal proved to be the winner for Niagara (1-0), while Joel Wigle, Steven Shipley on the power play and David Sysala also scored.

Connor Crisp had a power-play goal for Erie (0-1) and Nick Betz had a goal as well. The Otters were outshot 30-29 overall.

Festarini made 27 saves in the win over his former team. Oscar Dansk, in his OHL debut, turned aside 26 shots in the loss.

Erie's Connor McDavid, the first overall pick in the OHL's select draft, was held off the scoresheet in his debut. The 15-year old was granted exceptional status to play in the league this season.

The IceDogs raised their Central Division Champion, and Eastern Conference Championship banners to the arena's rafters before the game.

Quote of the Day

That was something I've been dreaming of, something I've told myself before the third period I was going to do ... It was an amazing feeling. It's hard to describe. I didn't believe it went in at first but when I saw all the reaction and all the fans going crazy and my teammates going crazy, it's just an unbelievable feeling. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know whether to jump or just skate and do a Theo Fleury. I don't think I'm the same caliber player he is so I couldn't do it.
