Islanders, Matt Martin agree to 4-year deal

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - The New York Islanders and left winger Matt Martin agreed to a four-year contract Saturday night.

The 23-year-old Martin, 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, had seven goals, seven assists and 121 penalty minutes in 80 games last season. He also set an NHL season record for hits with 374.

Martin has 12 goals, 18 assists and 294 penalty minutes in 153 career games, all with the Islanders.

Quote of the Day

I definitely think going back down helped me, I had a lot of confidence down there, I played a lot of minutes and I think that helped me a lot. With the 37 games up here, that gave me experience as well. I know what it takes to play in the NHL and now it's time for me to show that I'm capable of being a full-time NHL player.
