Islanders send Hamonic, Niederreiter to AHL
Top-four defenseman Travis Hamonic and recent first-round pick Nino Niederreiter were among 19 players the New York Islanders sent to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, on Friday.

Top-four defenseman Travis Hamonic and recent first-round pick Nino Niederreiter were among 19 players the New York Islanders sent to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, on Friday.

Hamonic, a 2008 second-round pick, had two goals, 22 assists and a team-best plus-6 rating in 81 games last season, his first full NHL season. He was third on the team in average ice time per game at 22:25, third with 175 hits and second with 157 blocked shots.

Niederreiter, the fifth pick of the 2010 NHL Draft, had one goal in 55 games last season, and had three goals in six AHL games.

Also sent to the AHL were forwards Casey Cizikas, Jason Clark, Brandon DeFazio, Mike Halmo, Kirill Kabanov, Brock Nelson, John Persson, Blair Riley, Johan Sundstrom and David Ullstrom ; defensemen Marc Cantin, Calvin de Haan, Matt Donovan, Jon Landry and Aaron Ness; and goalies Anders Nilsson and Kevin Poulin.

The Islanders also returned their two most-recent first-round draft picks to their junior teams. Center Ryan Strome, the fifth pick of the 2011 NHL Draft, was sent to the Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League. Defenseman Griffin Reinhart, selected with the fourth pick of the 2012 NHL Draft, was sent to the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League.
