Derek Roy is on target to return to action in November after offseason shoulder surgery, the Dallas Stars' website reported Thursday.

"I haven’t skated in a while," Roy said. "I am going to start skating in three weeks or a month, and get that back up to speed, keep rehabbing the shoulder and move forward."

Roy was acquired in a trade on July 2, coming from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Steve Ott and Adam Pardy.

The Stars decided he should have the surgery shortly afterward, even though Roy said he could play with the injury.

"[The Stars] figured a 100-percent Derek Roy would help the team more than playing at 75 percent, getting hurt, coming back and doing that all season. We made the decision on surgery and right now for us, and we are going to move forward," Roy said. "I could have played with it, but I wouldn’t have been 100 percent."

Roy had 44 points in 80 games last season for Buffalo, his lowest points-per-game rate since breaking into the NHL in 2003-04.

He is expected to help Dallas overcome the loss of Mike Ribeiro, who was traded to the Washington Capitals. The Stars also added Jaromir Jagr and Ray Whitney this offseason.

Roy said he started rehabilitation a few days after the surgery in an attempt to prevent the surrounding muscles from atrophy.

"The first month is tough, but after you get by that it is easier and you start responding faster and faster," Roy said. "I am just trying to stay ahead of the guidelines and keep working at it."

I didn't think it would actually work, but it ended up working, so I'm thanking my lucky stars tonight.
