Russia tops U.S. in shootout at Ivan Hlinka tourney
The U.S. Under-18 Select Team dropped a 2-1 shootout decision to Russia in its opening game of the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament on Monday

The U.S. Under-18 Select Team was unable to protect a 1-0 lead in the third period and it fell to Russia in a 2-1 shootout loss in its opening game of the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament on Monday in Breclav, Czech Republic.

U.S. goaltender Thatcher Demko made 38 saves before the game entered the shootout.

"We played hard and competed in a hard-fought game," U.S. coach Matt Herr said. "We're going to get our rest, make small adjustments to our game and get ready to go again tomorrow night."

Team USA broke a scoreless tie in the second period when Justin Bailey capitalized on a power play, slipping a rebound past Russian goalie Igor Serebryankov. The United States held onto its 1-0 lead until late in the third, when Russia was able to tie the game on a goal by Pavel Buchnevich at 13:42.

The U.S. team had a tremendous chance in overtime when Adam Erne was awarded a penalty shot with 1:14 left, but he was unable to convert. The game was then sent into a three-round shootout. Russia's Sergei Tolchinski beat Demko for the lone goal.

Russian went 0-for-7 on the power play; the United States went 1-for-6.

The U.S. team will return to action Tuesday when it takes on the Czech Republic.

Canada 4, Switzerland 1: Nathan MacKinnon scored and added two assists as Canada rallied from an early deficit to beat the Swiss. Curtis Lazar, Nick Ritchie and Yan-Pavel Laplante also scored for the Canadians, who face Slovakia on Wednesday.

Switzerland's Tim Wieser opened the scoring 8:05 into the game via the power play, but Lazar evened the score at 15:45 before MacKinnon gave Canada the lead with 11 seconds left in the period.

Ritchie made it a 3-1 game via the power play at 8:55 of the second period before Laplante sealed the deal with an empty-net tally at 19:46 of the third. Zachary Fucale made 30 saves for Canada.

"We obviously have a long way to go, but we're going to get better and better with each game and each practice," Canada coach Todd Gill said. "We have three in a row here and face Sweden (on Tuesday) and have to be better than we were tonight.

"We're a brand new club trying to learn systems and new players, so it's going to take a little bit. But it was a good start."
