Red Wings sign second-round pick Martin Frk
The Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday reportedly signed 2012 second-round draft pick, Martin Frk, to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday signed 2012 second-round draft pick, Martin Frk, to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The 6-foot, 204-pound Frk has spent the past two seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

"He came to camp and our guys liked him in Traverse City," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland told the team's website. "He competes hard and has a good shot and he has one year of junior remaining and then he’s pro eligible. So based upon his age, based upon what we saw in Traverse and what our scouts have seen out of him the last couple of years, we decided to sign him to a contract."

He connected for 22 goals and 50 points as a rookie in 2010-2011. He was limited to 34 games last season because of a concussion, but still managed 16 goals and 13 assists. He had five goals and 11 points in 17 playoff games.

"It was a tough season with injuries and stuff, so to see him get drafted by Detroit was something good for him and the fact he's getting a contract right away shows how much confidence they have in him," Halifax coach Dominique Ducharme said.

Frk, Detroit's initial pick of the draft at No. 49 overall, wore No. 91 because of childhood idol Sergei Federov and has said he's a big fan of Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk.

"For sure, play better defense and be a better skater," Frk said of areas he needs to improve. "And trying not to look too much for other guys (to pass to) because I think I have a great shot, so using my shot more."
