Kings to name Payne assistant coach
Former St. Louis Blues coach Davis Payne is set to join the Los Angeles Kings' coaching staff.

Former St. Louis Blues coach Davis Payne is set to join the Los Angeles Kings' coaching staff.

Kings general manager Dean Lombardi confirmed to Rich Hammond of lakingsinsider.com that Payne -- who was fired by the Blues 13 games into last season -- will replace Jamie Kompon on coach Darryl Sutter's staff.

Payne was named interim coach of the Blues during the 2009-10 season after Andy Murray was fired, and went 67-55-15 in parts of three seasons He's also coached in the AHL and ECHL. He led the Alaska Aces to the Kelly Cup championship in 2006.

Quote of the Day

He's only 17 but he can see the ice so well and he moves the puck and goes to the open ice all the time, so I just think he's a player that is ready to play in the NHL. I'm really looking forward to coaching someone like this.
