The 37-year-old center from Turku, Finland, will carry the flame July 24, three days before the opening ceremonies. He will receive the flame that day and take it through the London borough of Hillingdon, located in the northwestern region of greater London.

Koivu won't be the only prominent winter athlete carrying the torch that day. British skeleton racer Adam Pengilly, who won silver at the 2009 world championships in Lake Placid, also will serve as a torchbearer, as will Chinese short track speed skater Yang Yang.

Other prominent athletes who will carry the flame on July 24 will be German tennis star Boris Becker, British tennis player Oli Golding, and Paralympic basketball player Tyler Saunders.

Koivu is entering his fourth season with Anaheim after playing 13 seasons for the Montreal Canadiens. He has 776 NHL career points.

Koivu also has an impressive international resume, including bronze medals at the 1994, 1998 and 2010 Winter Olympics and silver at the 2006 Games, when he was the tournament's top scorer and named a tournament all-star.
