Defenseman Dylan McIlrath, the New York Rangers' 2010 first-round pick, is out indefinitely after the team announced Friday he had surgery to repair a dislocated kneecap.

The operation was performed Friday at NYU Langone Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases in Manhattan. The team did not announce a timetable for his recovery.

McIlrath was injured last week during the team's prospect development camp at the MSG Training Center in Greenburgh, N.Y. McIlrath was attempting to deliver a hit on Kyle Jean, but hurt his knee on the play.

The 10th pick of the 2010 draft, McIlrath was going to start his first professional season after three seasons with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League.
