Following are notes from the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft, held Friday at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH -- Following are notes from the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft, held tonight at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh:

YAKUPOV SELECTED FIRST OVERALL

Forward Nail Yakupov, selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers, is the third Russian-born player to be made the top choice in the NHL Draft, following Ilya Kovalchuk (2001, Atlanta) and Alex Ovechkin (2004, Washington).

Two picks later, the Montreal Canadiens selected forward Alex Galchenyuk, Yakupov's teammate with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL. Yakupov and Galchenyuk are the fourth set of teammates to be selected among the top three picks in an NHL Draft.

DEFENSE RULES EARLY SELECTIONS

For the first time in the history of the NHL Draft, eight of the top 10 overall selections were defensemen. A total of 13 blueliners were picked in the first round, tying the record set in 1996.

FIRST-ROUND PICKS BY BIRTHPLACE

The 30 players selected in the first round were born in seven different countries: Canada (14), United States (six), Russia (three), Czech Republic (two), Finland (two), Sweden (two) and Latvia (one).

NHL FAMILY TIES IN THE FIRST ROUND

D Griffin Reinhart (selected 4th overall by NY Islanders): His father, Paul, played 648 NHL games with Vancouver and Calgary. His older brother, Max, was drafted 64th overall in 2010 by Calgary and his younger brother, Sam, the 2011-12 WHL Rookie of the Year, is Draft-eligible in 2014. Both Max and Sam play for the Kootenay Ice (WHL).

C Mark Jankowski (selected 21st overall by Calgary): His grandfather, Lou, played for Detroit and Chicago in the 1950s and was a longtime NHL scout. His uncle, Ryan, is a scout for Montreal. His great uncle, Leonard “Red” Kelly, is an eight-time Stanley Cup champion with Detroit and Toronto.

G Malcolm Subban (selected 24th overall by Boston): His older brother, P.K. (43rd overall in 2007), completed his second NHL season with Montreal in 2011-12 and younger brother, Jordan, completed his rookie season with the OHL's Belleville Bulls.

C Brendan Gaunce (selected 26th overall by Vancouver): His brother, Cameron, was selected 50th overall in 2008 by Colorado and is a defenseman for the Lake Erie Monsters in the AHL. He played 11 games with the Avalanche in 2010-11.

RW Henrik Samuelsson (selected 27th overall by Phoenix): His father, Ulf, was drafted 67th overall in 1982 by Hartford. He went on to play 1,080 NHL games for five teams (Hartford, Pittsburgh, NY Rangers, Detroit and Philadelphia) and scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal for Pittsburgh in 1991. His brother, Philip, was drafted 61st overall in 2009 by Pittsburgh and played most of the 2011-12 season in the AHL for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

C Stefan Matteau (selected 29th overall by New Jersey): His father, Stephane, was drafted 25th overall in 1987 by Calgary. He played 13 seasons with six different NHL teams, including the 1994 Stanley Cup-winning New York Rangers.

TRADES ANNOUNCED

Philadelphia traded G Sergei Bobrovsky to Columbus for a 2nd-round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft (45th overall), a 4th-round pick in 2012 (117th overall) and a 4th-round pick in 2013.

Anaheim traded D Lubomir Visnovsky to the New York Islanders for a 2nd-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Washington traded C Cody Eakin and a 2nd-round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft (54th overall) to Dallas for C Mike Ribeiro.

Pittsburgh traded C Jordan Staal to Carolina for a 1st-round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft (eighth overall), C Brandon Sutter and D Brian Dumoulin.

Calgary traded a 1st-round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft (14th overall) to Buffalo for a 1st-round pick in 2012 (21st overall) and a 2nd-round pick in 2012 (42nd overall).
