Oilers sign GM Tambellini to new deal
The Edmonton Oilers announced Wednesday that the team had agreed on a contract extension with general manager Steve Tambellini. Terms of the deal were not revealed.

The Edmonton Oilers announced Wednesday that the team had agreed on a contract extension with general manager Steve Tambellini. Terms of the deal were not revealed.

Tambellini, 54, has been GM since July 2008, and the Oilers have missed the playoffs all four seasons in his tenure, finishing 14th or worse in the Western Conference each of the last three seasons.

However, Tambellini has overseen drafts that have yielded a number of highly-regarded prospects, some of whom are beginning to emerge as stars. Taylor Hall, the first pick of the 2010 draft, has had at least 22 goals each of his first two seasons, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the first pick of the 2011 draft, is a Calder Trophy finalist.

The Oilers currently have the first pick for the 2012 NHL Draft, the first time any team has done that since the Quebec Nordiques from 1989-91.

"Three years ago we asked Steve to begin a rebuild which we all know hasn't been easy," Oilers president Kevin Lowe said. "However, Oilers fans can take some consolation in the fact that Steve and his staff have acquired some amazing talent which will most definitely be the cornerstone to future sustained success for the Edmonton Oilers."

Prior to joining the Oilers in 2008, Tambellini spent 17 seasons as a member of the Vancouver Canucks management team.

Quote of the Day

I kept refreshing the page on the NHL website after the second round and I was shocked he lasted that long. I'm sure the Coyotes were pretty happy to get him. He's such a good player and he plays big in big games.
