Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson is unsure about his NHL future, but he does know one thing -- he wants to help his home country of Sweden win a gold medal at the 2012 IIHF World Championship.

Alfredsson told Sweden GM Johan Garpenlov on Sunday -- three days after the Senators had their season ended in a Game 7 loss to the New York Rangers in the first round of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs -- that he would join the team for the tournament, which runs May 4-20 and will be played in Helsinki and Stockholm

It will be the seventh time Alfredsson plays in the Worlds, and at 39 he will be the oldest player ever to participate for Sweden in the tournament. Borje Salming was 38 when he played for Sweden at the 1989 World Championship.

Alfredsson will be joined at the tournament by Norris Trophy finalist Erik Karlsson, as the Sens also announced Monday that the 21-year-old blueliner will join the Swedish squad.

"Immediately when we were eliminated from the playoffs, I spoke with [teammate] Erik Karlsson and asked him how he feels about going to the World Championship," Alfredsson told the IIHF website. "I told him that I myself feel good about it. This week when I was off with the concussion made that I feel rested now and ready to go."

Alfredsson said playing in the World Championship will have no bearing on whether he decides to return for a 17th NHL season in 2012-13.

"These are two separate things," he said. "I will make the decision [to play another season] a couple of weeks after the World Championship."

The United States landed another player Monday as well, as Anaheim Ducks center Kyle Palmieri joined the club. The 21-year-old spent the majority of the season with the AHL's Syracuse Crunch, but went 4-3-7 in 18 games for the parent club. He joins Anaheim teammates Bobby Ryan and Cam Fowler on the U.S. squad.
