Longpre and Joudrey power Springfield Falcons past St. John's IceCaps 6-3

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The St. John's IceCaps gave up goals in bunches for the second game in a row.

Nathan Longpre and Andrew Joudrey both scored twice as the Springfield Falcons had five straight goals to down the IceCaps 6-3 on Saturday in American Hockey League action.

St. John's loss was reminiscent of its 5-1 drubbing at the hands of the Portland Pirates on Wednesday when they conceded five unanswered goals.

"I thought we didn't compete very hard tonight," IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge said. "I thought in the third period we had a little push, but not even close to enough of what we needed. Again, we didn't have enough guys showing up to play here tonight."

Martin St. Pierre and Cody Goloubef also scored for Springfield (34-33-6). Nick Drazenovic added three assists for the Falcons. Paul Dainton made 26 saves for the win.

Eric O'Dell scored a hat trick for St. John's (41-23-8), while John Albert had two assists.

IceCaps starting goaltender David Aebischer was pulled after allowing four goals on nine shots. Ed Pasquale made seven saves in relief.

McCambridge acknowledged the IceCaps have been suffering from an abnormal number of injuries, with three scratches, but he knows other teams are not feeling sorry for them.

"If we think that other teams around the league are going to look and see how many injuries we have, and a couple call-ups, and feel sorry for us, we are mistaken," he said. "There's nobody looking and seeing the losses and saying that they feel sorry for the St. John's IceCaps."

O'Dell thinks the team let off the gas after scoring their early goal at 1:40 in the game.

"I thought we came out pretty hard and then I think we thought we had the game after that first goal. They came out pretty hard after that first goal we scored, and they kept the momentum and we let back."

O'Dell's hat trick was the first of the rookie's career, but he admitted it was over-shadowed by the loss.

"First professional hat trick, I'm pretty excited for that. It felt good scoring that goal, but then again, we still lost the game and it's pretty tough," he said.

The Falcons went 2-for-3 on the power play, while St. John's was 1-for-4.

"They were getting everything through, and they did a great job screening the goalie," O'Dell said.
