San Jose Sharks forward Ryane Clowe found an interesting way of breaking up an odd-man rush by the Los Angeles Kings during Thursday's game.
While seated on the bench, Clowe reached down with his stick and poked the puck away from Kings forward Jarret Stoll. No penalty was called on the play.
Had any of the on-ice officials seen Clowe's action, he would have been assessed a minor penalty for interference.
As stated in the NHL Official Rules: "A minor penalty shall be imposed on any identifiable player on the players' bench who, by means of his stick or his body, interferes with the movements of the puck or any opponent on the ice during the progress of the play."
Clowe was apologetic on Friday.
"Obviously, as you can tell when I sat down on the bench, that was stupid, that was a dumb play," he said in the San Jose Mercury News. "It probably should have been a two-minute penalty and I was lucky it didn't cost the team. It was definitely a brain cramp at the time. Don't think it'll ever happen again."
