WHL Roundup: A look at Friday's games

Multi-point games seem to be a regular occurance these days for Brendan Shinnimin.

The 20-year-old scored once and set up three more as the Tri-City Americans defeated the host Spokane Chiefs 4-2 on Friday in Western Hockey League action.

Shinnimin is currently on a 19-game point streak that includes 13 multi-point performances and 51 total points.

On the season, he has recorded two or more points 36 times and now has 125 points in just 65 games.

Adam Hughesman had two goals for the Americans (48-17-3), who have won three straight and are tied with the Edmonton Oil Kings for first in league standings, while Justin Feser had a goal and two assists.

Dominik Uher and Davis Vandane each had a goal for the Chiefs (35-23-9), who lost in regulation for the first time in six outings and sit fourth in the Western Conference.

Ty Rimmer made 35 saves for the win while Mac Engel stopped 15 of 18 shots in a losing effort.

Tri-City was a perfect 2 for 2 on the power play as Spokane failed to score on four opportunities with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Prince Albert 5, Swift Current 2; Regina 5, Moose Jaw 4; Saskatoon 6, Brandon 2; Medicine Hat 3, Kootenay 1; Calgary 6, Lethbridge 3; Edmonton 5, Red Deer 2; Victoria 3, Kelowna 1; Kamloops 6, Vancouver 3 and Portland 4, Everett 3.

At Spokane, Wash., the Americans held a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play thanks to Hughesman.

Hughesman scored two power-play goals in the opening period, one at 4:38 and another at 19:59.

Uher cut the lead in half 1:41 into the second period but Feser scored shorthanded at 11:57 to restore a two-goal lead heading into the final period.

Vandane made it close by scoring at 18:54 but Shinnimin secured a Tri-City victory with an empty-net goal at 19:27.

At Regina, Jordan Weal scored once and set up two more and Matt Hewitt made 39 saves as the Pats (36-25-7) edged Moose Jaw (41-19-8) to earn their first playoff berth since 2008.

At Brandon, Matej Stransky had a goal and three assists and Ryan Olsen scored twice and added an assist as Saskatoon (38-27-3) beat the Wheat Kings (36-28-4).

At Cranbrook, B.C., Emerson Etem scored twice and Tyler Bunz made 26 saves as Medicine Hat (41-22-5) slipped past the Ice (36-24-8).

Hitmen 6 Hurricanes 3

At Lethbridge, Alta., Trevor Cheek scored twice and Chris Driedger made 39 saves as Calgary (41-24-3) doubled up the Hurricanes (27-40-1).

Oil Kings 5 Rebels 2

At Red Deer, Alta., T.J. Foster scored twice and Travis Ewanyk had a goal and an assist as Edmonton (46-15-7) beat the Rebels (30-31-6) for their seventh straight victory.

Royals 3 Rockets 1

At Kelowna, B.C., Jamie Crooks scored the winning goal at 6:22 of the third period as Victoria (22-40-6) halted the Rockets (29-30-9) three-game winning streak.

Blazers 6 Giants 3

At Vancouver, Brendan Ranford had a two goal, five-point night, and Brandon Herrod scored a hat-trick as Kamloops (46-17-5) defeated the Giants (37-26-5).

Winterhawks 4 Silvertips 3

At Everett, Wash., Ty Rattie had a goal and an assist and Mac Carruth stopped 21 shots as Portland (47-17-4) snapped the Silvertips (20-38-9) three-game winning streak.
