Chicago Blackhawks forward Ben Smith will miss the rest of the season and will undergo surgery next Thursday to repair a right hip labral tear and a hernia.
The Hawks said the 23-year-old is expected to make a full recovery in approximately 16 weeks.
Smith has recorded two goals in 13 games with Chicago this season. The Avon, Conn., native is third on the AHL Rockford IceHogs with 15 goals, including a team-high eight on the power play, and ranks fourth on the team with 31 points in 38 games.
He's a winner. We want winners here, and he's a proven winner. He's won two Stanley Cups. He's 22 years old and been a big part of it. He's got all the right tools. He's got size (6-foot-1, 204 pounds) and strength. He's exactly what we were looking for. He's going to be a big piece of our team for many, many years to come.
