MONTREAL -- "The Kid" would have loved it.

The memory of the late Gary Carter was honored by the Montreal Canadiens prior to their game Sunday evening against the New Jersey Devils at the Bell Centre.

The Habs came out for their pre-game warmup wearing jerseys with Carter's No. 8 on their backs, while house organist Diane Bibeau played the old Montreal Expos fight song that rang through Olympic Stadium back when the Hall of Fame catcher was winning over the hearts of this city in the 1970s and 80s.

Those jerseys will be signed by the Canadiens and sold at auction, with all proceeds going to the Gary Carter Foundation. The foundation's mission is to "better the physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing of children," according to its web site. Details on the auction will be published on the Canadiens' web site, canadiens.com, on Tuesday.

Before the national anthems, the Canadiens showed a video of Carter's highlights in an Expos uniform set to the music of The Eagles hit song "New Kid in Town," and the crowd of 21,273 at Bell Centre clapped along to the beat as they relived Carter's time here.

After the video Youppi!, the longtime Expos mascot who was adopted by the Canadiens when the baseball team moved to Washington in 2004, came out in his old uniform with the exclamation point on the back.

The fans were then asked to observe a moment of silence in Carter's memory, and you could hear a pin drop in the arena.
