Isles' Hamonic expected to miss two weeks

The New York Islanders will be without one of their top defensemen for the next two weeks.

Travis Hamonic underwent surgery and required stitches after taking a slap shot from Buffalo Sabres defenseman Christian Ehrhoff to the face during Saturday night's game at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Hamonic, 21, needed help getting to the Isles' dressing room and left a trail of blood in his path.

The Islanders announced Sunday afternoon that Hamonic suffered a broken nose as a result of the play, which transpired with 14:39 remaining in the third period. The injury leaves New York with five healthy defensemen unless Milan Jurcina -- who missed Saturday's game with a laceration on his elbow -- is ready for Tuesday's game at Philadelphia.

Hamonic, one of three second-round picks (No. 53) by the Isles at the 2008 NHL Draft, has a goal and 11 assists while averaging 22:17 of ice time in 51 games. Dating back to last season, Hamonic had appeared in 113 consecutive contests.
