St. Louis Blues defenseman Ian Cole was suspended Sunday night, without pay, for three games for delivering an illegal check to the head of Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Cole will forfeit $21,081.09. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 9:11 of the first period. A minor penalty for illegal check to the head was assessed on the play. The Red Wings beat the Blues, 3-0.

Cole will miss games on Jan. 3 (Phoenix), Jan. 5 (Edmonton) and Jan.7 (Colorado). He will be eligible to return Jan. 10 at Montreal.
