NEW YORK –Buffalo Sabres forward Ville Leino has been suspended, without pay, for one game for elbowing Philadelphia Flyers forward Matt Read during NHL Game #403 in Buffalo on Wednesday, Dec. 7, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Leino will forfeit $24,324.32. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
The incident occurred at 1:32 of the third period. No penalty was assessed on the play.
Leino will miss the Dec. 9 game vs. Florida. He will be eligible to return Dec. 10 vs. the New York Rangers.
He seemed to thrive on his own and didn't really need any push from me. I certainly don't want to get in the way of the coaches. You see how that goes sometimes. I never really worried about it and just enjoyed the ride.
