The Spokane Chiefs took advantage of a break and then scored three quick goals early in the third period to roll over the Everett Silvertips 8-1 in a Western Hockey League game Sunday night.
With the Chiefs up 2-1, Everett goalie Kent Simpson dropped his stick on an innocent play behind the net late in the second period.
Marek Kalus got the puck along the right wall and fired a shot at Simpson, who stopped the puck but couldn't keep Mike Aviani from banging in the rebound.
Spokane (9-4-1) broke the game open with three goals in 97 seconds early in the third period. It started at 5:14 when Jarid Hauptman scored his first-career goal. Anthony Bardaro added his 10th of the season at 6:36 and just 36 seconds later Aviani got his second of the game.
Dominik Uher added his sixth goal with four minutes left but crashed into the boards and had to be helped off the ice without putting weight on his right leg. On the ensuing five-minute major, 16-year-old defenceman Tyler King scored his first career goal.
Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Regina 4 Medicine Hat 3 (OT); and Moose Jaw 3 Calgary 2 (OT).
In Spokane, Wash., Tyler Maxwell scored his 11th for Everett (4-13-3) during a 5-on-3 power play in the early minutes of the second period, but the first period was all Spokane.
Striking first was newcomer Carter Proft, poking the puck past Simpson after Liam Stewart carried it hard to the net. Just over six minutes later, Mitch Holmberg went high from the right circle for a power-play goal after a cross-ice pass from Uher.
Simpson was lifted after making 39 saves. He was replaced by Austin Lotz, who gave up the last three goals in 12 shots.
Luke Lee-Knight had 17 saves in the Spokane net.
