Leafs' Clarke MacArthur suspended for hit to head

NEW YORK (AP) - Toronto Maple Leafs forward Clarke MacArthur was suspended for the rest of preseason and two regular-season games on Saturday for hitting Detroit's Justin Abdelkader in the head.

This was the ninth suspension by new NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan during the preseason. Those bans total 31 regular-season games and close to $700,000 in lost salary.

MacArthur will de docked $35,135 and is eligible to return to Toronto's lineup Oct. 15 against Calgary.

His hit came late in the third period Friday of Toronto's 4-3 overtime road victory against the Red Wings. No penalty was assessed.

Quote of the Day

That's a really tough thing to play through; when you finally are thrown out there, the game is fast, intense, every single play matters, you've got to find a way to play through that and make smart plays. So it's a huge testament to [Vermette] and some other individuals in our locker room that are putting their own ego, their own wants and needs aside, and are ready for those opportunities when they do come.
