Ducks' Jacques suspended for remainder of preseason, five regular-season games
Anaheim Ducks forward Jean-Francois Jacques has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason and for five regular-season games.
Anaheim Ducks forward Jean-Francois Jacques has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason and for five regular-season games for leaving the bench on a legal line change for the purpose of starting a fight with Vancouver Canucks forward Mike Duco during a preseason game on Sept. 24, NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan announced Tuesday.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Jacques will forfeit $17,567.55. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

At 16:31 of the third period, Jacques left the players bench on a legal line change. He made no attempt to take part in the play, skating a direct path to Duco to initiate an altercation. Rule 70.2 states, in part: "A player who has entered play while play is in progress from his own players' bench … who starts an altercation may be subject to discipline in accordance with Rule 28 -- Supplementary Discipline." Jacques received a minor for instigating, a major for fighting and a 10-minute misconduct as well as an automatic one-game suspension for instigating an altercation in the final five minutes of a game.

Jacques missed the Sept. 25 preseason game at Los Angeles and will miss preseason games Wednesday vs. Vancouver; Sept. 30 vs. Los Angeles and Oct. 4 vs. Jokerit in Helsinki, Finland. He also will miss regular-season games Oct. 7 vs. Buffalo in Helsinki; Oct. 8 vs. the New York Rangers in Stockholm; Oct. 14 vs. San Jose; Oct. 16 vs. St. Louis and Oct. 17 at San Jose. He will be eligible to return Oct. 21 vs. Dallas.

Quote of the Day

We want to make sure that whoever makes our team really makes our team by earning it and not putting them in situations where they get preference because of their status as a first-round pick or whatever it might be. That's not going to happen. Everybody has to earn their way on our team.
