NHL pre-season Capsules

DETROIT - Jaromir Jagr had a goal and an assist and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 in a pre-season game Friday night.

James Van Riemsdyk and Matt Read also scored for Philadelphia and Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves.

Fabian Brunnstrom scored for Detroit and Jimmy Howard stopped 19 shots.

Van Riemsdyk and Jagr scored 52 seconds apart late in the first period to erase the Red Wings' 1-0 lead.

Van Riemsdyk tied it 1-all with 2:34 left in the opening period and Jagr gave the Flyers the lead for good with 1:42 remaining in the first.

The Flyers' victory came a night after a banana was thrown from the stands as Wayne Simmonds scored during a shootout. Simmonds, who is black, did not play Friday night but was seen signing autographs.

MONTREAL (AP) — Max Pacioretty fuelled the comeback and Erik Cole scored the shootout winner for the Canadiens.

Pacioretty converted Montreal's first shootout attempt after scoring a pair of power-play goals in the second to key the Canadiens' comeback from a 3-0 deficit. The Canadiens' left wing played his second game since returning from a broken vertebra, the result of a controversial hit by Boston's Zdeno Chara on March 8.

Scott Gomez drew Montreal even at 3-3 with 36.5 seconds left in the third when the puck went in off Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson.

Zack Smith scored goals 1:03 apart in the first period and Milan Michalek got the Senators' third goal midway through the second.

Nathan Lawson stopped all 11 shots he faced after taking over for Montreal starter Carey Price following Michalek's goal.

Craig Anderson played the entire game for Ottawa, stopping 29 shots.

TORONTO (AP) — Jason Pominville scored on the power play at 14:42 of the third period and Buffalo won its third straight pre-season game.

The Maple Leafs killed off four previous penalties before Pominville connected for the Sabres with the man advantage.

Buffalo's Matt Ellis fed rookie Corey Tropp off a Leafs turnover and he beat Reimer low for a 1-0 lead.

Phil Kessel tied it for Toronto in the second on a power-play goal.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Dany Heatley scored twice in his Minnesota debut, including the winner in overtime for the Wild.

With Minnesota on the power play in the extra period, Heatley tipped Mikko Koivu's shot from the right circle past Columbus goalie Allen York.

Josh Harding made 31 saves for the Wild, who also got goals from Devin Setoguchi and Kristopher Foucault.

Fedor Tyutin scored a power-play goal and had a pair of assists for Columbus. Derek Mackenzie and Ryan Russell also scored for the Blue Jackets. York made 20 saves.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Defenceman Brendan Bell snapped a tie with 3:04 left, and New York earned a pre-season split with New Jersey.

Bell flipped a shot from the right point that got past Devils goalie Martin Brodeur, giving the Rangers the win. New York lost 2-1 in overtime to New Jersey on Wednesday night in Albany, N.Y.

Brad Richards had a goal and assist in his Rangers debut, and Derek Stepan and Marian Gaborik added goals for New York. Chad Johnson stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third period for the win.

Adam Henrique, Jacob Josefson and Ilya Kovalchuk scored for New Jersey. Brodeur played the entire game, making 27 saves.

BOSTON (AP) — Rich Peverley and Patrice Bergeron each had a goal and two assists to lead Boston to victory in its pre-season home opener.

Brad Marchand added a goal and an assist.

Rick DiPietro made 20 saves for the Islanders and Tim Thomas, last season's Conn Smythe Trophy winner, had 13 saves for Boston.

The Bruins also got goals from David Krejci, Dennis Seidenberg and Johnny Boychuk. Dylan Reese scored twice for the Islanders. Trevor Frischmon also scored for New York.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jack Hillen and Chris Mueller scored in the third period to rally Nashville past Carolina.

Hillen and Mueller scored 1:37 apart against Carolina backup goalkeeper Justin Peters, who entered the game at the start of the third.

Alexei Ponikarovsky had two goals for Carolina.

Carolina goalkeeper Cam Ward saw his first action of the pre-season after being slowed by upper body stiffness since the opening of training camp a week ago. Ward started and played 40 minutes. He gave up a goal to Nashville's David Legwand at 17:58 of the second period.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Ryan Shannon scored two goals in the second period and Dwayne Roloson made 31 saves in Tampa Bay's victory.

Mattias Ritola opened the scoring eight minutes into the game, lifting a backhander past Panthers goalie Jacob Markstrom with 7 seconds remaining on a power play.

Shannon capitalized on another man-advantage situation at 6:31 of the second period, then scored again at the 12:55 mark.

Jack Skillie broke through for the Panthers on a power play 4:20 into the third after the Panthers came up empty on six opportunities in the first two periods.

Michal Repik scored Florida's other goal 12 minutes later.

Carter Ashton and Vincent Lecavalier had third-period goals for Tampa Bay.

Markstrom finished with 28 saves.

CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Brandon Saad scored the winner with 3:21 left in the third to lift Chicago to its first pre-season win.

Set up by Jonathan Toews, Saad drove to the net and beat Washington's Tomas Vokoun with a high shot from the left edge of the crease for the game-winner.
