LONDON, Ont. - A dominating debut by Max Domi led the London Knights to an 8-0 win over the Saginaw Spirit in Ontario Hockey League action Friday night.
Domi, who is the son of former NHLer Tie, scored three times and added an assist as London (1-0-0) started the season in convincing fashion.
Seth Griffith notched a pair, while Bo Horvat, Ryan Rupert and Dane Fox all contributed a goal and an assist for London. For Knights goalie Michael Houser it marked just his second career shutout in his 80th appearance. He had previously blanked Belleville last October.
After a scoreless opening frame, London exploded for five on Saginaw (0-1-0) goalie Tadeas Galansky in the second period. Matt Rupert and Josh Anderson each had three assists.
The 16-year-old Domi was drafted eighth overall by Kingston in May, but was traded to the Knights for three future second-round picks.
The Knights won despite missing three players who were at NHL camps — Jared Knight with Boston, and defencemen Jarred Tinordi with Montreal, and Pittsburgh product Scott Harrington still away.
London's next action is Sunday afternoon at Guelph.
Saginaw travels to play defending champion Owen Sound on Saturday night.
