Raising the Cup Presents: 1998 Stanley Cup Final Game 4

NHL Network is going to raise the Cup all summer long.

Every day at noon, we'll roll out another Cup clincher to stave off your hockey hunger. Watch your heroes of yesterday win it all ... again.

Fans can tune in at 12 p.m. ET every weekday for a different game -- and different champion. A complete program schedule can be found on NHLNetwork.com (U.S.).

The mission for the Red Wings was set a mere six days after winning their 1997 Stanley Cup championship. After a private party on June 13, defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov and team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov were in a limousine accident and suffered severe brain injuries. Slava Fetisov had also been in the limo but came out relatively unscathed. The Wings rallied around their comrades and dedicated the season to them, and Konstantinov was in attendance at the MCI Center, home of the Capitals, viewing the game from a wheelchair.

As they had done the first three games, the Red Wings scored first on the power play when Sergei Fedorov spun out of coverage near the right point and made a gorgeous cross-ice pass to a cutting Doug Brown in the left circle.

Martin Lapointe added to the lead in the second period when he took a feed from Igor Larionov at the blue line, uncorking a shot that beat Olie Kolzig at the right corner. Kolzig managed to keep it there with some amazing saves and was finally rewarded when Brian Bellows capitalized on a rare Detroit mistake, a Jamie Macoun turnover that Bellows backhanded past Chris Osgood to cut the lead to 2-1.

After getting stoned by Kolzig earlier, Tomas Holmstrom came out from behind the net and found Larry Murphy in the right circle. He chipped a shot over Kolzig's left shoulder, re-establishing the two-goal lead.

Brown scored again on a two-man break, finishing a pass from Slava Kozlov to put the game out of reach and clinch the championship for the Red Wings.

After Commissioner Gary Bettman presented the Stanley Cup to captain Steve Yzerman, Yzerman handed the Cup to Konstantinov, placing it in his lap and joining his teammates wheeling Konstantinov around the rink to a cheering Washington crowd.
