Entering just the second seventh game in a Stanley Cup Final since 1971, Rangers coach Mike Keenan had already made history, becoming the first head coach to appear in two Game 7s with two different teams. Hoping for a better result than his last Game 7 -- a Philadelphia Flyers loss to Edmonton in 1987 -- there were a number of forces potentially conspiring against the Rangers. After leading the series 3-1, the Rangers had just lost Games 5 and 6 by a combined score of 10-4. Throw in a cruel history that hadn't seen the Rangers win the Stanley Cup since 1940, and there was tremendous pressure on the Blueshirts.

Brian Leetch and Adam Graves staked the Rangers to an early 2-0 lead in the first period, but a shorthanded goal from Trevor Linden early in the second would cut the Rangers' advantage in half. Mark Messier's insurance marker momentarily gave New York some breathing room until Linden scored again to make the late stages in Game 7 an electric affair. Despite an offensive flurry from the Canucks, Rangers goaltender Mike Richter stood his ground, giving the Rangers a 3-2 win and their first Stanley Cup in over 50 years.
