The 1985 Stanley Cup Final featured a clash of youth and experience. The Philadelphia Flyers were the youngest team in professional sports that year with a relatively-unknown coach in Mike Keenan and a second-year player, Dave Poulin, as captain. Contrarily, the defending Cup champion Edmonton Oilers showcased some of the legendary figures in the sport and were making their third consecutive Final appearance, which is the last time an NHL team accomplished that feat.

After the clubs split the first two games in the City of Brotherly Love, the series shifted North of the Border for the next three matchups. Wayne Gretzky provided early heroics in Game 3, scoring twice in the first 90 seconds and notching a hat trick by the first intermission, as the Oilers took control of the series with a 4-3 win. In Game 4, "The Great One" tallied two more goals and Edmonton scored four unanswered en route to a 5-3 win and a commanding 3-1 series lead.

In Game 5, the defending champs emphatically showed they were not ready to surrender their title to the new guard just yet. Gretzky and Jari Kurri posted a goal and three assists each and Mark Messier and Paul Coffey scored two goals apiece, as the Oilers dropped the Flyers, 8-3, to win back-to-back Stanley Cups.

Grant Fuhr anchored the championship run in net, stopping an unprecedented two penalty shots in the series. Kurri tied the all-time playoff record with 19 goals, but it was No. 99 who won the Conn Smythe Trophy, the first of two in Gretzky's illustrious career. In just 18 games played, the Edmonton captain set a postseason record that still stands today with 47 points (17 goals, 30 assists).
