'Canes re-sign Sanguinetti, Brett Sutter

The Carolina Hurricanes on Friday agreed to terms with defenseman Bobby
Sanguinetti and signed forward Brett Sutter to one-year, two-way contracts.

Sanguinetti's deal will pay him $600,000 in the NHL and $62.500 if he's in the AHL. Sutter's deal is for $525,000 if he's in the NHL and $75,000 in the AHL, with a guarantee of $105.000.

Sanguinetti, 23, played in 31 regular-season games with the Hurricanes' AHL affiliate, the  Charlotte Checkers, in 2010-11, scoring 3 goals and 15 points. The Trenton, N.J., native missed 47 games from mid-November through mid-March after suffering a hip injury on Nov. 19. 

"Bobby played well in Charlotte last year despite missing more than half of the season with a difficult injury," Carolina Director of Hockey Operations Ron Francis said in a statement. "He worked hard to come back and to be able to contribute to the team late in the season. We look forward to his continued progress in his career."

Originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the first round (No. 21) in the 2006 Entry Draft, Sanguinetti was acquired by Carolina in a trade on June 25, 2010. He has 18 goals and 99 points in 181 career AHL regular-season games with Hartford and Charlotte. Sanguinetti made his NHL debut with the Rangers on Nov. 27, 2009, and has played in five career NHL regular-season games, all with New York.

Sutter, 24, was acquired by the Hurricanes on Nov. 17, 2010, from the Calgary Flames and spent most of the remainder of the 2010-11 season with Charlotte, where he had 9 goals and 21 points in 60 games. He also led the Checkers in playoff scoring with 14 points in 16 games. The son of former Flames GM Darryl Sutter also played five NHL games with Calgary and Carolina, earning an assist with the Flames and making his Hurricanes debut on Feb. 12 at Tampa Bay.

"Brett performed well for the Checkers last season, especially in the playoffs," Francis said. "He will have an opportunity to compete for time on NHL level this season."

Drafted by Calgary in the sixth round (No. 179) of the 2005 Entry Draft, Sutter has totaled 1  goal, 2 points and 12 penalty minutes in 19 career NHL games with Calgary and Carolina. In 272 regular-season AHL games with Quad City, Abbotsford and Charlotte, he has notched 32 goals and 80 points, along with 266 penalty minutes.

Brett is the cousin of Carolina forward Brandon Sutter, who signed a contract extension earlier this week, and is the eighth member of the Sutter family to play in the NHL.
