Spaling sends Nashville to second round with huge goal

Saturday, 08.13.2011 / 12:01 AM / NHL Network

NHL.com

All summer long, NHL Network will be replaying the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs -- from every jaw-dropping goal to every highlight-reel save to every crushing defeat.

Each game of the postseason -- spanning the more than two-month period from the opening round to Boston's Game 7 clincher of the Stanley Cup Final -- will be shown on the Network throughout the offseason.

Fans can tune in at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET nightly for a different game -- and different chance to re-live history. A complete program schedule can be found on NHLNetwork.com.

The Nashville Predators were never a franchise known for having an abundance of superstars, and their 2010-11 team wasn't any different with goalie Pekka Rinne as the lone bona fide All-Star. On the other side of the ice, you had the Anaheim Ducks with uber-talented forwards almost everywhere you looked, including 2011 Maurice Richard Trophy winner Corey Perry, the high-scoring Ryan Getzlaf and future Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne. But playoff hockey isn't about how many big-time names appear on the roster, but rather how they perform as a single unit on the ice.

Even the most diehard Predators fan could not have predicted that when Game 6 was over, Nick Spaling would emerge as the ultimate hero. Spaling had only 8 goals in 102 regular-season games in the NHL. But the second-year winger's 2 goals gave Nashville the advantage it needed to grab a 4-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks and also marked the franchise's first Stanley Cup Playoff series win in its 12-year history. But as they say, it's always the quiet ones you have to look out for.
