Capitals add defensive depth, sign Richmond
The Washington Capitals signed free-agent defenseman Danny Richmond to a one-year contract Monday.
The Washington Capitals signed free-agent defenseman Danny Richmond to a one-year contract Monday, a move announced by Capitals vice president and general manager George McPhee.
 
Richmond, 26, played in the American Hockey League with the Toronto Marlies this past season, recording 23 points (20 assists) and 121 penalty minutes in 68 games. He finished the season ranked third on the team in penalty minutes and third amongst defensemen in points and assists.
 
The 6-foot, 192-pound Chicago native has 155 points (123 assists) and 957 penalty minutes in 433 career AHL games with Lowell, Norfolk, Rockford, Wilkes-Barre, Peoria and Toronto. He also won a gold medal with the United States at the 2004 U-20 World Junior Championships in Helsinki, Finland.

A second-round pick (No. 31) of Carolina in the 2003 Entry Draft, Richmond has made 49 NHL appearances, with the Hurricanes and Chicago, registering 3 assists and 75 penalty minutes.
