The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed young defenseman Mike Weber, inking him to a multi-year deal Monday.

The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed young defenseman Mike Weber, inking him to a multi-year deal Monday.

Weber, 23, turned his first full NHL season last year, playing 58 games for the Sabres. The 6-foot-2, 211-pound American led all Sabres in hits with 158. He also had 4 goals and 13 assists.

Weber played in all seven games of Buffalo’s first-round playoff series against Philadelphia, and was third on the team with 17 hits. He also had one assist and 6 penalty minutes in that series.

After seeing brief call-ups in his first two seasons after turning pro, Weber spent the entire 2009-10 season with the American Hockey League's Portland Pirates, amassing 5 goals and 21 points.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.

— Bryan Trottier on making his return to coaching as an assistant with the Sabres
