Wings add Ian White with two-year deal
The Detroit Red Wings signed free-agent defenseman Ian White to a year deal on Saturday.
The Detroit Red Wings must have liked what they saw of Ian White when they faced San Jose in the playoffs this spring -- they signed the 27-year-old defenseman on Saturday. The Detroit Free Press says the contract is worth $5.75 million over two years.

The Sharks acquired White from Carolina at the trade deadline, and he had 2 goals and 10 points in 23 games with San Jose after going 0-10-10 in 39 games for the Hurricanes and 2-4-6 in 16 games for Calgary. White added 1 goal and 8 assists in 17 playoff games as the Sharks beat Los Angeles and Detroit before losing to Vancouver in the Western Conference Finals.

With the Wings, White, 27, figures to step in for Brian Rafalski, who announced his retirement last month.

White, a sixth-round pick (No. 191) by Toronto in the 2002 Entry Draft, came to the NHL with the Leafs in 2005-06 and played three-plus seasons in Toronto before being dealt to Calgary on Jan. 31, 2009. He has 36 goals and 143 points in 401 regular-season games.
