Reports: Claude Noel to coach Winnipeg
The NHL's new Winnipeg franchise reportedly has chosen Claude Noel to be its first head coach.
The NHL's new Winnipeg franchise reportedly has chosen its first coach.

Both TSN and the Winnipeg Free Press are reporting that Claude Noel will be behind the bench when the team hits the ice of the MTS Centre in October.

The team has scheduled a news conference for Friday prior to the NHL Entry Draft in St. Paul, Minn.

Noel is the former coach of the AHL's Manitoba Moose, where he spent one season compiling a 43-30-7 record and losing in the second round of the playoffs. Prior to that, he spent four seasons as the head coach of the Milwaukee Admirals and three as an assistant coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He has also coached in the ECHL and IHL.

Noel does have some experience behind an NHL bench -- he was the interim coach of the Blue Jackets for 24 games in 2010 after Columbus fired Ken Hitchcock.
