Burrows' OT goal just misses record

Alexandre Burrows' game-winner in overtime on Saturday was fast -- but not quite fast enough to set a Stanley Cup record.

Burrows beat Boston goaltender Tim Thomas 11 seconds into OT to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory against Boston in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final at Rogers Arena. But his goal was two seconds behind the fastest goal ever scored in the playoffs.

Twenty-five years ago, Montreal's Brian Skrudland scored just nine seconds into OT in Calgary to give the Canadiens a 3-2 win in Game 2 of the Final. That's not only the fastest goal in the history of the Final, it's the fastest in playoff history -- Skrudland broke the mark of 11 seconds set in 1975 by the New York Islanders' J.P. Parise in the third and deciding game of their preliminary-round series against the Rangers.

Two players -- Chicago's Pit Martin in 1972 and the Hawks' Martin Havlat in 2009 -- scored 12 seconds into OT to win a playoff game.

Before Burrows scored, the second-fastest OT goal in a playoff game came on April 9, 1936, when Buzz Boll of Toronto scored 31 seconds into overtime to give the Maple Leafs a 4-3 win against Detroit.
