Beliveau to have surgery next week
Hall of Famer and longtime Montreal Canadiens team ambassador Jean Beliveau is scheduled to undergo a preventive surgical procedure next week to repair abdominal aneurysms. The team said the procedure, known as endovascular surgery, will be performed using the most recent techniques, which are minimally invasive.

Beliveau, whose general state of health is very good, according to the team, will need a few months to fully recover from the surgical intervention.

"We are pleased that Mr. Beliveau is under the good care of head team physician David Mulder. On behalf of all of our fans, players and the entire Montreal Canadiens family, I would like to wish Mr. Beliveau a prompt and complete recovery," owner and CEO Geoff Molson said in a statement.

Beliveau played on 10 Stanley Cup-winning teams with the Canadiens and captained five of them. He retired after leading the Canadiens to the 1971 Stanley Cup as the franchise's all-time leading scorer and the NHL's all-time leading playoff scorer.

Beliveau scored 507 goals and added 712 assists for 1,219 points in 1,125 regular-season games, a 1.08 points-per-game average. He was just as good in the playoffs, scoring 79 goals and adding 97 assists for 176 points in 162 games, again a 1.08 points-per game average.

He was the winner of the first Conn Smythe Trophy in 1965 and concluded his career six years later by scoring 22 points in 20 playoff games at age 40 while leading the Canadiens to victory in a seven-game Final against Chicago. Beliveau was twice named the winner of the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player. He led the League in scoring in 1955-56 and was runner-up three times, including once to linemate Bernie Geoffrion. He led the NHL in goals twice and assists twice.
